Choosing the right caterer is absolutely key to the success of any wedding. Everyone remembers boring food or bad service – for all the wrong reasons.
So how can you ensure that you are making the best decision – particularly if this is the first large ‘event’ you have organised?
Sharing our industry insight, we have set out below some of the key questions you should be asking the caterers you are considering for your wedding day.
Are they listening?
Has the caterer listened to what you want to achieve? Do they understand your vision and any concerns you might have? Do they offer bespoke services or do they have a one-size-fits-all approach?
Expertise
Are they confident working in the venue? If not, do they have plenty of experience within similar venues?
What are their credentials? What other events have they worked on? Can they provide any case studies?
Experience
Can they provide any recommendations from previous clients? If you can speak to a previous client, make sure you ask about their experience of the planning process as well as the wedding day itself.
Was the caterer friendly, professional and efficient? Do they have any testimonials?
Do they have any videos you can watch so that you can visualise what working with them may be like?
Format
If your reception involves food stations or buffets, has due consideration been given to the flow of guests in the space? The right caterer should be able to provide styling options that closely fit your theme/colour palette.
Special requirements
What is their approach to providing vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or other special dietary dishes – will those guests be made to feel as special as the rest?
Financials
If you are comparing a shortlist of caterers, have their costings been provided like-for-like?
Make sure you look carefully at the details – particularly to avoid additional costs being required to fulfil the initial brief further down the line.
Allocating an insufficient budget for staffing is a common way of cutting corners but it can cost the success of the wedding reception.
Added value
What impact do you want the food to have? The right caterer should be able to provide added value elements that help to realise your dream.
Does the caterer offer any personalisation or styling options to help make your day feel special for you personally, as a couple?
